How long after a neuter do I have to worry about a cat licking it?

I brought my cat home from being neutered yesterdary. Of coarse he was licking himself so I bought a cone for his head as the vet recommended. I don’t remember doing this with my other cats. Do you think it’s safe to take the cone off? It’s been 24 hours since surgery. (This vet is through a clinic that only works onSunday so I can’t call them.).

I would leave the cone on your cat when you’re not there to supervise. The cat will get used to moving around with it on. I would leave it on for several days when you’re not supervising the cat. It’s still pretty raw I’m sure, so I wouldn’t let your cat lick it too much. It’s okay for him to clean the area but you don’t want him "fixating" on it. Here’s an article for you: http://www.pets.ca/encyclopedia/neuter_cat.htm
This site recommends keeping the cat calm, indoors and from excessive licking for 7 days after the neutering procedure.
When my sister’s cats got spade, she had to watch them for 5 days. But the vet doesn’t really expect you to be able to stop them constantly- you have to leave the house sometime! You can probably take the cone off now. But if it makes you more comfortable, you could leave it on for another day or 2.
You don’t need to worry at all. He will be fine. If you see swelling and bleeding that seems to not heal, that’s when you should be worried.
When my cat got neutured he was fine, but very affectionate because he was stressed from the whole ordeal and needed companionship.
Eight months ago my wife picked up our kitten from the shelter. There policy is that all animals most be spade or neutered. The vet didn’t tell me to buy a cone or any special steps to take. Cats will always keep themselves and I didn’t have any problems. Don’t worry your cat will be fine.
I have recently had my two female kittens neutered. The vet told me to watch that they did not lick each others wounds as they can only feel the pain themselves – she said that if it hurt, they would soon learn not to lick the area! They have been fine – no problems and all is healing well. I would just keep an eye on it to make sure there is no infection etc – apart from that – I would take the cone off as I am sure they would be more comfortable without it and they have been through enough already poor little things! Mine felt ever so sorry for themselves afterwards!
