This is our online cat behavior page. You can scroll down to the bottom to find individual articles of specific behavior problems discussed in detail. An overview of how to understand your cat is to follow.

Solving a cats behavior problem is no easy task but it is worth the effort because once these problems are solved the feline tends to remember and retain a learned lesson very well.

The first thing to learn about a pets behavior problems is to understand your cat’s language. Just like with human languages a cat may speak with a heavy accent. This is just a fun guideline.

Feline body language chart

Of course your cat cannot speak, but they do have an extensive body language portfolio.

When you hear your cat cry, scream or meow they are most likely calling your attention so that you can watch their body movements and understand what they are telling you.

So basically we can say when the cat starts to cry or meow they are saying hey, look at me, I’m trying to tell you something important. Now the timing may be bad on this cat conversation. But chances are if you take a minute and stopped to pay attention or even pet or stroke the feline they will feel satisfied that you have at least listened to what they had to say.

Ear and Tail Body Language

One of the most telling cats body language indicators or communication methods is the position of the tale. A straight up vertical tail stretched sky words indicates that your cat has an open mind and is ready for conversation.

That same vertical position of the tail accompanied with the shaking of the tale means that your cat is excited about something. Usually this vertically shaking tale indicates a positive excitement.

If the tail is in the down position and straight back along with a side to side swishing motion this shows the cats behavior has turned to agitated. When the tail blows up by the raising of the hair this indicates that you just pushed the felines full anger button and he is prepared to fight.

The ear position is a good indication of mood. Ears pinned back would be aggressive cat behavior. Ears up and in a neutral position would be an opened frame of mind. Forward pointing ears would indicate concentration or investigation of something interesting!

This is Riley laying with Momma. When you look at her face you can always tell what she’s thinking because she communicates well with humans. All of her cat behavior problems have been solved. We are once again a happy family unit. The first article below has a video featuring Riley. Her movie shows how to tell when a cat is happy because Riley is really good at communicating this emotion.

Fixing Cat Behavior Problems at Home

Solving behavior problems begins with understanding your own cats body language. This will take some time to translate, the cats non-speaking form of language into your own language.

For example, my two cats love fresh water. If the water sits in the bowl for more than a couple of hours they will request that the bowl be refilled immediately. First I will hear a small cry that draws my attention to their body language.

Then a few steps towards me, and back towards the water bowl and then a look back at me is a clear message that it’s time to refill the bowl. Recently we purchased a cat fountain that prolongs the amount of time between water changes. Good investment plus instant entertainment for kitty.

One thing that applies to Solving cat behavior problems is that cats are very short on patience. You can compensate for this with your over abundance of patience when solving cat behavior issues.

We hope that you find the online cat behavior articles below, entertaining and useful. But remember, if you have a serious cat problem and you don’t seem to be getting anywhere with love, kindness and a touch of bribery. It may be time to contact an expert?

Hunting And The Domestic Cat

Have you ever seen kitty crouch down ready to pounce at your feet and thought, what are you doing ? Well this common cats behavioral problem is an ingrained instinct going back many centuries and generations. There are a couple of different and odd habits like the clicking of teeth, which indicates that the moggie is so entranced by its prey that it is carrying out the action of the quick kill, in preparation for the real thing ! Another is the swooshing of the head, side to side this helps with the visual factors before attack. Now sometimes when your cat brings you a mouse or a bird, it might seem a bit upsetting. In fact this gesture is to show how much kitty cares about you and is actually treating you like one of the family by bringing you food, that you couldn’t catch yourself.

Cat dragging stuff

Cat dragging things

Cat dragging things

Cat dragging stuff and crying. I seriously need help figuring this one out. Okay, so when my cat was a baby, she used to snatch up socks and walk around with them in her mouth, it was so rare to see her doing it, so i just dismissed it as cute kitten behavior.

Well now she’s about a year, and she just had 3 kittens, and she is snagging ALL clothes. Pants, shorts, shirts, socks, bathrobes, and towels. Anything she finds laying on the floor or in her reach, she grabs and drags around. NOT ONLY, is she doing this more and more often, but she also lets out a terribly loud cry while doing it, as if she is in heat, even though shes not. Is this like a sign of stress? or maybe even just a form of OCD for cats?

Is there ANYONE who can help me in making her stop? its so unbelievably annoying to have to worry about what is going to be laying in the middle of my living room every time I get home with company. please any help? Leave your comments here and thank you in advance!

Reply to NJ cat: My cat does a similar thing in this case I do not think it has to do with the hunting instinct. I think that is a separate issue. With my cat (and the original post) it sounds like a maternal/kitten thing. My cat Lucy has had a fuzzy ball toy since she was a kitten, she is now about 16 years old.

She has never played with any other toy and she is not a hunter. All her life she has (maybe 2-3 times a day and at night)began meowing LOUDLY (as if in heat)and carrying the ball around. It has often reminded me of a cat carrying a kitten. Sometimes she will bring it to us, but very rarely. More often she moves it from room to room, sometimes puts it in my shoes, or on the couch, or in her sleeping basket.

She does it by herself and stops if anyone comes in the room. It is very strange. I have often thought that it might have had something to do with her mother or kitten hood or perhaps that she had a heat before she was spayed? I don’t know. Hopefully your cat’s behavior will taper off and become more manageable.

Cats Hissy Fits

Pixie bob Bob

Pixie bob Bob

I have a Pixie-bob cat named Bob. He is going on two years old, has no tail and is the weirdest cat I’ve ever seen or had. Why? Because he is the only cat I’ve ever known who will RUN to the bathroom when I turn the faucet on and then sit on the side of the tub and hang out. I read in the tub, he comes over and reaches his paw out and grabs my book. Every time I do my make-up he has to sit right there and play with my brushes.

When I let him outside and I follow him out, he will turn to me, and hiss! When he’s inside, he’s the loveliest little thing. I take him to the vet and he will love up on everyone. He even sits in the scale. He is so strange, but I love him. I don’t know how to explain the way my cat is the way he is, he is just so strange.

Hey Rheana Thank You for submitting these pictures of Bob the pixie-bob. It is strange that he hisses at you when you follow him outside. Maybe he thinks that you will blow his cover? Many times when cats go outside they go into hunting mode and stealth and stalking pray becomes the primary objective. Maybe he thinks you are not a good hunting partner?

As for the cats and bathrooms it never ceases to amaze me the strange things cats will do in the bathroom. They love bathtubs and faucets and watching the water going around in the hopper. A bathroom is like Busch gardens adventure land to a Cat. I wish I could be so easily amused. Thanks again for the pictures of Bob he does seem silly but in a good way. Me and Cindi wish you guys health and Happiness ~ Mark
