Cat scratching posts are numerous. In fact there are probably dozens of different ones you could buy. These three main factors should decide what type of post you should buy for your cat.
1. Texture. Some cats have a preference for the type of surface or fabric that they like to scratch. If your cat likes to mark word, then get a wooden post. If your cat likes fabric then get a sisal covered scratching post. Sisal is a tan colored twine rope that you see wrapped around a lot of cat tress. Many posts are make of carpet, which is not the best surface, since claws can become trapped in these fabrics, which is why sisal is preferred.
2. Sturdiness. Cats will not use something this is not sturdy. Depending on the size of your cat, you may even need to attach the post to a wall or put some additional weight on the base to prevent it from moving or falling over.
3. Length. Many cat scratching posts are too short. You should find a post that is at least two feet long. This allows the cat to fully stretch out on it, which is why cats love to mark up couches, they are big and tall.
When you go to buy your cat scratching posts keep these three tips in mind. You will find that most posts sold in the pet aisle of grocery stores to be too small, which is why you need to go to a pet store.
